Frequently Asked Questions

We have received a lot of questions about criteria for joining the Asian Environmental Youth Network — so we thought we would clarify a few things.

What exactly is ‘the network’?

Currently, the network consists of a Slack group where Asian youth passionate about climate change can connect and organize. From random discussions to news updates to starting initiatives, the network is the place to make change happen. As of 2024, we have 500+ people from over 30 countries who are a part of our group.

Who can join the network?

The short answer is this: as long as you are an Asian youth passionate about climate change and sustainable development, you’re totally welcome to join!

The slightly longer answer is: Asia is a large continent spanning many regions. We are open to anyone who self-identifies as being of Asian heritage. What country you currently live in now or where you were brought up does not matter. We invite Asians from all across the world to join our network, although we do prioritize initiatives led by Asians directly helping Asia in our communication channels.

What age range does our network allow?

Currently, we define anyone below the age of 35 as ‘youth.’ If you are outside of this range, do keep in touch by providing your emails or subscribing to our newsletters. We hope to roll out an initiatives where we connect working professionals on climate change with youths, so we would need your support as well.

Can I join if I’m mixed (Asian + something else)?

Absolutely! If you feel passionate about making positive change in Asia, you are still more than welcome to join our network.

Can I join if I’m not of Asian descent but I live in Asia? What about if I’m not Asian and don’t live in Asia?

We want this to be a space for a group that has long been underrepresented in the environmental movement. While we definitely appreciate any and all support from people from other backgrounds, if you’re not Asian, we ask that you be mindful of your contributions to this space. You are definitely still invited to sign up for our news and to be a part of this network for information-related purposes, but we ask you to think twice before posting in our group communication channels, especially if you don’t live in Asia. If you are a non-Asian living in Asia and are active in local environmental movements, you are of course welcome to share news related to environmental issues in your area, but again, please make sure that you are mindful of this group’s purpose.

What do I get out of joining the network?

By joining our group (which is currently based on Slack), you will receive access to the latest information, be applicable for our grant money, and obtain the necessary resources and tools for fundraising, organizing, etc. You will also create partnerships and initiatives across the world, be invited to our events, and build connections with other Asians doing amazing work, which - of course - is the best part.

Do I have to be a long-time, experienced environmentalist to join?

Absolutely not! Part of AEYN’s purpose is to serve as a launching pad for you to meet and join other amazing people and organizations. We hope to give you the tools, resources, and platform to create your own initiatives and spearhead real progress — all we ask from you is passion!
